SpLD Assessments

What assessments are offered?

  • Full Diagnostic Assessment

This assessment will establish whether specific learning difficulties are present. The report includes a detailed analysis of the findings, recommendations, and how the strengths and weaknesses will impact on learning.  This report can be used as suitable evidence for applications for Disabled Students’ Allowance, Exam Access Arrangements and support in the workplace.

  • Adult Workplace Assessment

This is a full diagnostic assessment, often with adults who have suspected they have a specific learning difficulty but have never had this confirmed before. Those who have been previously diagnosed may need an up to date assessment relevant to the workplace. In addition to the findings, it will help to provide guidance for the employer and employee about the range of support available to adults in the workplace.

Who conducts the assessment?

The assessment will be carried out by Rebecca who is a qualified Specialist Teacher who holds an approved qualification (as noted in the SpLD Working Group 2005/DfES Guidelines).  Rebecca holds a current Assessment Practising Certificate, is an Associate Member of the British Dyslexia Association (FE/HE), has a MA SEN and an up to date DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) certificate.  She also possesses her own professional indemnity insurance and is listed on the Specific Learning Difficulties Assessment Standards Committee (SASC) website.

How long will the assessment take?

Usually the assessment takes between 2- 3 hours but there will be opportunities for rest breaks throughout that time.  Remote assessments are slightly shorter due to the tests used.

Where will the assessment take place?

In person assessments will take place in a private room in your college/university/workplace or in a library/community space.

Remote assessments will take place on Microsoft Teams and you will need to be in a quiet and private room and use a computer (mobile phones or tablets can’t be used).

What do I need to bring with me to the assessment?

If you are currently studying, it is useful to see examples of previous essays or extended pieces of writing.  Any copies of previous diagnostic reports or medical evidence (relevant to the assessment) is also important and helps with compiling the evidence.

It’s a good idea to bring a drink with you to the assessment and for remote assessments, you will also need to have a pen and paper ready.

If you are a parent accompanying your child, then you may be present for the initial conversations regarding background history but it is requested that you then leave your child to complete the assessment.

What will happen during and after the assessment?

During – Firstly, Rebecca will check the information in the background questionnaire that you completed when you booked the assessment.  The outline of the assessment will then be explained and there will be the opportunity to ask any questions before it begins.

Following on from that, a number of tests will be given which assess your reading accuracy, comprehension, fluency, spelling, written skills, understanding of language; non-verbal reasoning skills, general ability strengths and weaknesses, working memory, processing skills and phonic recognition.  Where applicable, other areas will be explored such as motor coordination and attention and concentration.

After – A detailed report will be emailed to you that will contain the results from the assessment along with recommendations and suggested support strategies.  It is advised that you read through the report carefully and if you have any questions, then don’t hesitate to contact Rebecca who will be happy to discuss this further with you.  This report will be sent 21 days after the assessment and you will have 3 days to request that any amendments are made to the report.

How can I book an assessment?

Contact Rebecca with your request and you will then be sent a link to the booking page where you can select a suitable time/date for your assessment.

If you are funding the assessment yourself, you will be sent a link to pay the deposit and before the final report is released, you will be sent another link to pay the final amount.  PayPal and bank transfers are accepted methods of payment.

If your college/university/workplace is funding the assessment then payment will be dealt with directly with them.
